Over the course of his career, Anthony Lent has been drawn to the history of classical and neoclassical putti motifs, specifically in Greek and Roman jewelry along with 19th century French sculpture. This has led him to develop countless versions of this Putti face, which is a reference to mythology, mysticism and religion. This version of the Putti face itself was based on Lent’s children when they were babies, even though he regards them as abstractions from their features instead of portraits. Although this winged baby face is often confused with the cherub, our putti is a creature almost entirely composed of wings, and reflects a long history of iconography.
